Devil, a mystery thriller involving crime and investigation, tackles a genre that is rarely covered in Korean dramas. It follows the popular trend of international hit dramas like CSI that feature elaborate production scale, fast-paced, tightly woven plots, and characters with unique professions. Departing from the usual, repetitive K-drama plots, Devil offers a refreshingly unique experience by introducing elements that challenge the viewers' psychology through suspense and mystery. Directed by Park Chan Hong (Revenge), Devil stars rising stars Ju Ji Hoon (Palace), Shin Min Ah (A Love to Kill), and Uhm Tae Woong (Stranger Than Paradise). Shin Min Ah displays maturity and growth in her performance as an absent-minded librarian with psychic abilities. In contrast to his character in Palace, Ju Ji Hoon plays a cold-blooded lawyer whose poker face hides his dual personality. Uhm Tae Woong's charisma shines brightly in his portrayal of a homicide detective who is tormented from the guilt of a crime he committed in the past. Scooped by So-net TV for broadcast in Japan, Devil has earned rave reviews from critics for its bold experimentation and high quality.

The story begins with a girl who witnesses in her own psychic visions the murder of a boy. Her accounts are quickly dismissed due to lack of evidence, but twelve years later the case resurfaces. Homicide detective Kang Oh Soo (Uhm Tae Woong) receives a mysterious letter containing a taro card that reads "judgement". The drama escalates as Oh Soo, now in charge of a case involving the murder of his father's attorney, discovers a matching taro card at the crime scene. When Oh Soo encounters the artist responsible for the pictures on those taro cards, he begins to unlock the puzzle surrounding yet another crime - one that hits much closer to home.

한국적 취향으로 진일보한 장르극

〈마왕〉은 ‘사이코 메트리’, 연쇄살인 등을 다루며 추리 스릴러 드라마로서 어려운 걸음을 옮겼다. 12년 전 억울하게 형을 잃고 변호사가 된 오승하(주지훈)가 형사 강오수(엄태웅)의 주변 인물들을 살해하며 복수한다는 내용이다. 선과 악의 구분 없이 복수하는 자와 복수 당하는 자의 고통이 공존하는 드라마는 후반부로 갈수록 극성이 더 커졌다. 제3자를 앞세워 교묘히 살인을 한다는 설정은 치밀한 계산으로 합을 맞추지 않으면 설득력을 잃기 쉽지만 〈마왕〉은 사건과 사건, 인물과 인물 사이의 다리를 팽팽하게 연결해나갔다. 김지우 작가는 반전을 거듭하는 정교한 이야기 구성으로, 제작진은 화면분할이나 조명 색의 변화로 인물의 심리를 표현하는 등의 참신한 시도로 마니아 층을 불러 모았다. '부활'에 이어 또 다른 복수극이었던 '마왕'을 김지우 작가, 엄태웅 등의 출연진과 함께 뭉쳐 만든 박찬홍 감독은 두 번째 복수극 또한 섬세한 연출력을 보여 낮은 시청률에도 불구하고 '수작을 만든 감독'이라는 인식을 심어 줬다. 박찬홍 감독은 "'마왕'은 내 인생에서 최고의 작품이었다. '마왕' 같은 작품을 할 수 있는 나는 행복한 사람이다"라며 드라마를 마친 소감을 전했다. "시청률에는 누구도 흔들리지 않았다". 시청하기 편하고 쉬운 스토리만을 선호하는 시청자들의 습성을 알기 때문에 '시청률을 따를 것이냐, 작품성을 따를 것이냐'는 항상 연출자들의 딜레마다. '마왕' 또한 한국 드라마 역사의 한 획을 그을 정도로 웰 메이드 드라마였다는 호평을 받았지만 시청률 면에서는 부진한 성적표를 받을 수밖에 없었다. '마왕'은 천편 일륜적인 한국 드라마들에서 벗어난 시도를 했다는 점에서 더 높은 평가를 받고 있다. 현재 일본에서는 마왕이 소넷TV로 방영이 되었고, DVD는 12월,1월에 거쳐 두편으로 나누어 발매될 예정이다. 현재 예약 주문을 받고 있는 상황이며, HMV등 일본 DVD판매 사이트에서 예약순위 5위안에 진입되어 있는 등 높은 관심을 불러 일으키고 있다.

한 소녀의 잔상으로 시작되는 소년 살인사건! 하지만 소녀의 두서없는 증언으로 철저히 무시되면서 사건은 빠르게 종결되고.. 그렇게 12년이 흐른 어느 날 강력계 형사 강오수(엄태웅)는 심판이란 타로카드와 편지를 한통 받고 의아해 한다. 그리고 얼마 후, 오수는 아버지 강동현(정동환)의 회사 고문 변호사(권현태) 살인 사건을 맡게 되고 그 현장에서 자기와 똑 같은 타로카드를 발견하게 된다. 오수는 점점 베일에 싸여가는 살인 사건을 조사하던 중 사건 현장에 있던 타로카드를 그린 사람을 만나게 되는데..

강오수(엄태웅)는 사건 해결 중 반팀장(주진모)의 소개로 서해인(신민아)을 만나게 되고 해인이 사이코메트러의 능력을 갖고 있음 알게 된다. 사건의 실마리를 찾지 못하던 오수는 해인의 도움으로 권현태 변호사 살인 사건의 용의자를 알게 되는데.. 한편, 사건 용의자를 조사하던 강오수는 오승하(주지훈) 변호사를 만나게 되고 그가 죽은 권현태 변호사의 제자임을 알게 되면서 뭔가 심상치 않는 기운을 느낀다. 그러던 중, 오수에게 또 다른 타로카드가 날아오고 오수는 왠지 불길한 예감을 느끼게 된다.
