Professional Review of "The Girls Rebel Force Of Competitive Swimmers (DVD) (Hong Kong Version)"

June 23, 2008

Poor Aki's having the worst first day ever at her new school. As if it's not bad enough that she gets pushed into the swimming pool as a prank, there's a new virus circulating among the student body and the doctor who comes to inoculate them against it is a raving madman. A raving madman who likes to experiment with viruses, no less, and one who pumps the entire school full of a virus of his own design that transforms them into bloodthirsty maniacs. Things would be looking grim indeed if not for the fact that pool water neutralizes the virus and Aki was actually kidnapped years earlier and trained as a secret assassin by the same mad doctor. It's time for Aki to kick some ass but not before stripping down for some lesbian loving with her new found best friend.

In the world of trash film there is fun trash and trashy trash. Japan's GP Museum Soft dominantly makes the first kind. Their films are typically very low budget, shot on the quick and spare no opportunity to flash a bit of skin or a gratuitous panty shot. With very few exceptions GP films very rarely travel outside Japan and there's good reason for that. And so I had to raise an eyebrow when I saw that The Girls Rebel Force of Competitive Swimmers - a truly fantastic title for a film – had received a low cost, region free DVD release in Hong Kong.

No doubt about it, Rebel Force is very much a trash film and very much in keeping with GP's regular mode of operations. It is shot on the cheap with a no name cast and low grade effects and features both nudity and panty shots within the first ten minutes of the running time. High brow this ain't. That said, it's also not hard to see why this horror pinku has built some notoriety for more than just the skin. The budget may be low and the fight sequences are laughably poor but the set pieces are often wildly inventive and the whole thing is charged with a lunatic sense of energy.

Never seen a juggling, fire breathing zombie out for blood while reciting math problems? This movie has that. A girl nursing the heroine back to health by feeding her soup via lesbian kisses? It's got that, too. A villain that plays pied piper to fulfill his sexual desires? That's in there. Throw in one of the most surprising - and effective - secret weapons I've come across in a while and you've got something truly memorable. Not a good film by any measure and sure to offend many, The Girls Rebel Force of Competitive Swimmers lands squarely on the fun end of the trash spectrum

Yikes, what a mess! Customer Review Rated Bad 3 - 3 out of 10
How can you go wrong with a movie entitled "The Girls' Rebel Force of Competitive Swimmers"? That's a great title, right? But just as you can't judge a book by its cover, you can't judge a movie by its title. This movie simply is too incompetently made to be either scary, funny, sexy, or entertaining.

None of the "actors" in this film can act; they all seem to be operating in slow motion. Why oh why do they take so long to say their lines? This makes the film deadly dull. The script has nothing witty or interesting for the characters to say. The special effects are decidedly unspecial. The filmmaking is amateurish. Indeed, this is the kind of film in which the lead character is stabbed in the back with a shard of glass, then moments later is apparently unhurt. Did the director simply forget that the character had been stabbed? Clearly, the filmmakers didn't care.

Are you satisfied with a movie in which the highlights are buckets of spurting blood and lingering shots of Sasa Handa's surgically-enhanced chest? Then you may enjoy this film. If you seek a movie that is competently made, a movie that makes any kind of sense, a movie that doesn't insult its audience, then this movie is not for you.

Bust Caution - Aki's Nightmare Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
Are you prepared for a high velocity horror fest that leaves you gasping for breath and a film that throws total bloody chaos in front of your eyes - like you've never seen before? Well pardon a wee bit of exaggeration there, but one thing to stress here - is if you're a fan of Asia horror movies and have wanted something to jolt you upright and make your jaw drop to the floor, welcome to Aki and her High School Girl Chums in Hell, and of which I can absolutely guarantee is a full throttle gore fest that will blow out your eyeballs and make your heart beat out of your chest. "The Girls Rebel Force of Competitive Swimmers" is certainly one of the most manic Japanese horror movies actioners I have seen since "Battle Royal" (no, its not on that level, but...), and by having such an intense amount of gore and high octane madness and mayhem, you will either love it in a 5 star sense or absolutely hate it, and wish you had never even placed the DVD into your player drive. You'll either find it fantastic or gross! I certainly must warn some possible viewers here that this film is a very adult movie of intense bloody violence and also features some light adult sex shenanigans of lesbianism and the like. In fact this film stars Handa Sasa, an AV starlet in the main role here of Aki, who finds herself having some similar close encounters of the AV kind here with her 'twin' star swimming team mate Sayaka (cute little Tokito Ayumi)....amongst all the blood. So by all of that mentioned, not your usual long haired ghost popping out of a big swimming pool then. After watching this, you may wish that it was..and hug her as some long lost sister!

You can tell all of this film means business by the grungy red opening titles, grunge rock chords and the shaky camera of Aki making her way to the school in Hell - and a nod towards Zack Snyder's 2004 version of George A. Romero's "Dawn of the Dead", which this film is certainly being prompted by. As mentioned, the violence in this is ferocious and unrelenting, with more human entrails and guts falling out of bodies than couples falling out with each other in romance dramas, and limbs and blood flying everywhere like gnats in torrid heat. The chainsaw is certainly the biggest lethal weapon here, especially in the hands of a female kinky dominatrix schoolteacher zombie (its got everything this!), who is one of the main 'monsters' Aki and the girls have to deal with. I have to admit, I did at first anticipate all of this to be a quite moderate horror film (silly me!), looking at the cover. But when I reached the first horror scene in Aki's shower room and of the inquisitive male training coach peering in the shower and of the followed violent blood letting over the tiled shower room walls - I suddenly realized that this 'moderate horror' was going to be anything but. Still, the graphic blood and horror in all of this is very 'theatrically cartoonish' and choreographed to seem more like a parody of horror. Most things happening in this are are graphically violent, but mostly absurd.

Although "The Girls Rebel Force of Competitive Swimmers" does have a sports related theme concerning the rebel force swimming team, (who five tantalizingly and titillatingly displayed on the DVD cover), this is completely a satirical black humored horror fest of zombie and undead bashing, similar to films like "Dawn of the Dead", the Japanese horror martial arts movie "Verses" and (although I haven't actually seen this film, only the trailer as yet) the Japanese mad high school girl revenge film "The Machine Girl". With of course a lot of "Battle Royal" mayhem thrown in for good (or bad) measure..(but with chainsaws here instead of guns). So, yes, its all a high school girl battle out to the death against 'virus' infected zombies - with lots of face biting undead, gushing theatrical blood, flying limbs and eyeballs and entrails ripped out by chainsaws amongst some erotica elements of sex and death. Other than that, the only swimming related aspects are when Aki and Sayaka are doing the fellowship 'bust stroke' together, and some occasional scenes of Aki diving in some water and having a swim. So unless you're a member of the Munster's World Ladies Chainsaw Swimming League or the Undead Blood High Divers Rejuvenation Team, this isn't your usual sporty competition thematic. In fact the only competitive sport here is the video game type "House of the Dead" zombie bashing.

The loose story aspect here is of how Aki, when diving into a swimming pool alone to train for her trophy competition, suddenly confronts a dark sinister specter in the water there, and then apparently seems to die. But she awakens, and is part of the Girl's High School Swimming Team (hurrah!). But the team are all grimly subjected to a depraving and evil killer 'virus', that is spreading across their school and poisoning some of the girls and teachers it infects. This mysterious 'virus' then degenerates anyone it touches, turning students or teachers into murderous and slaughtering monsters (part of the Deja Vu Monsters core), bent on disemboweling and limb severing (obviously they couldn't settle for a kiss) any of the other 'normal' girls and teachers the 'monsters' can find. And with a class room scene at one point of carnage and mayhem. So the swimming team turn from a bunch of young competition hopefuls into a "Dawn of the Dead" type survival horror rebel fighting force - trying to fight off lunatic teacher zombies and flame throwing teacher zombies. This manga fighting swimming team is led by Aki, a once cruelly treated sex slave from a male controller, who quickly teaches the other girls to don their swim attire (which seems to have protective zombie elements) and fight this evil crazed male inducing misogynistic virus and the monsters at all costs. At first, the girls swimming team are beset by a nasty taskmaster of a swimming coach (whose temperament seems even worse than the virus itself), and who is as pleasant as an over sexed octopus. But when the girl's find this coach dead in the shower room, as he was looking for Aki there who was washing herself...the horror really begins.

Aki also meets up with her 'twin' Sayaka, a girls she asks to join the swimming team and who looks nothing like her. But Sayaka as a birthmark on her bosom and a mole on her neck, in exactly the same places as Aki. This causes Aki to suspect that because of this coincidence and the madness that as ensued in her school, she as found her long lost twin sister who she can use help to rid the school of all of the undead. Every aspect of this satirical comedy horror, though, is laced in such over the top gore and fused daftness, that it becomes ludicrously and dementedly laughable, and almost impossible for it all to be took too seriously. Think "The Evil Dead". By all of its obvious titillation, too, its all not far off becoming a sort of "Carry on Kinky Horror School of Swimmers v Zombies" satire, too. At one point, an evil Miss Whiplash dominatrix school teacher appears on the scene, kitted out with black stockings and a chain saw....yep another chain saw (and speaks English instead of Japanese for some reason) and begins to slice and disembowel as many of the swimming team as possible and even ties up another unsuspecting male teacher, with some gruesome results. And by this added 'erotica' element fused into all the blood letting, and considering Aki and Sayaka's close chumminess, I began to think this could also be called "The Death Fetishes of Competitive Nymphomaniacs" (unless that's the sequel, though). Scenes like this continue as Aki and her bosom buddy Sayaka marshal the swimming team (who are in more blood than water) to fight the evil virus and also the evil controller character that reappears from the recesses of Aki's past - with a mix of Japanese high school girl jinks (but in skinny dipping attire), fan service fetsihness (like the anime and manga), grisly and unreal horror capers and gore. Later Aki confronts her demon the 'controller', who made her a sex slave in her past and a battle ensues between them, with eventually Aki confronting again the specter in the pool that she first encountered at the beginning of the film.

The acting and the movie itself is what you might expect - a B Movie equivalent of all those 1950s horrors and the like, and here with cute AV star Handa Sara as the heroine botty kicker. But altough this is the case, Handa Sasa, Tokito Ayumi and the direction of this furious roller coaster ride of a horror satire, really does compel the viewer so much by all the intenseness of it all. Handa Sasa's is also quite focused in her part in this, too, and she manages to portray a quite convincing and gutsy heroine. Even though this is not on the same level as the other movies mentioned here, its frenetically wild and tightly paced action horror enough to keep you transfixed - and I think the director here as made one succesful film that will be seen as a grungy cult classic of its type in future. It will be a sure fire hit with horror fans! Handa Sasa will certainly woo a lot of her fans here with her up front battle with the undead too (and some bits I cannot mention) and her kick in the controller's bits where it hurts the most! Eye watering stuff!

I'll warn again, though, that this is not for the squeamish or the easily offended. In fact, maybe a 'bust caution' may be needed considering Aki and Sayak. But if you can stomach all of this horror (and naughty bits) - you should find all of this a bit of black comedy horror fun, with an irony to it all at the finish. The ending is a blast, too! Which you'll know what I mean if you watch this! The DVD here is only of the movie and there are no extras offered. But it is in anamorphic wide screen and has an alternative Cantonese soundtrack, as well as the original Japanese. Region free. Aki and Sayaka don't come included with this edition, though, so it will have to be the 2 disk special hologram surround screen version for that in 2030 (maybe). High octane horror at its maddest this!
