YesAsia Editorial Description

From top-selling artist to blockbuster leading man to blockbuster director, Taiwanese superstar Jay Chou has proven over the last eight years that he can do no wrong when it comes to moving units. After awards and accolades for his 2007 directorial debut Secret, Chou stays in front of the camera for his latest offering, the glossy basketball youth film Kung Fu Dunk. Released over the Lunar New Year to hefty box office receipts, this film is loosely based on the popular manga Slam Dunk, but with an added kick of kung fu fun choreographed by award-winning action director Ching Siu Tung (Hero, The Warlords). A well-known basketball and martial arts enthusiast himself, Chou struts his skills and then some more, thanks to gravity-defying CGI assistance. Hong Kong veteran Eric Tsang co-stars as a sinewy agent, along with Wilson Chen (Blue Gate Crossing) and Twins' Charlene Choi (Simply Actors), looking cute as a button as Chou's romantic interest.

Abandoned as an infant, Fang Shi Jie (Jay Chou) grew up in a martial arts school and has acquired himself some impressive fighting skills. He can also throw with amazing accuracy, a talent that grabs the attentions of con man Zhen Li (Eric Tsang). Unwittingly pulled into Zhen's hustling plans, Fang crosses the wrong people and gets kicked out of his martial arts school. Zhen then enrolls Fang into First University in hopes of turning him into a basketball star. After some quick training, Fang and team are tearing through the league to the championships, but some foes from Fang and Zhen's past have money staked on the game, and they're more than willing to play dirty to get their way.

Kung Fu Dunk is directed by Kevin Chu Yen Ping, Taiwan's commercial cinema champion of the 1980s and 90s with films like No Sir and Young Policemen in Love, not to mention Hong Kong wackfests like Flying Dagger. With Chu at the helm, Kung Fu Dunk lives up to its Lunar New Year film slot with some flighty, nonsensical comedy that wears its heart and silliness on the sleeve. Veteran actors Eddy Ko and Kenneth Tsang make welcome appearances, as well as Ng Man Tat and Leung Ka Yan who readily ham it up as kung fu masters.

Shi-Jie (Jay Chou) grows up in a martial arts school and he is well versed in kung-fu. With his skills and his good reflexes, Shi-Jie also excels in basketball, especially the slam dunk technique. On the pretext of helping Shi-Jie find his family, Wang-Li (Eric Tsang) invites him to join the university's basketball team in hopes of making money out of him.

There Shi-Jie faces new challenges on the basketball team, especially with team mates Ting-Wei (Bo-Lin Chen) and Xiao-Lan (Baron Chen). Do not waste your money. Customer Review Rated Bad 0 - 0 out of 10
After the hugely successful Shaolin Soccer every producer/ director wanted to capture on the success of kung fu intergrated sports/ activities; such as kung fu mahjong, kung fu sweetheart and now kung fu dunk. Where as the first two mentioned provided mild entertainment this picture fails to deliver in every way.

Jay Chou has never been that great of an actor, with his wooden expressions but i still like the guy because i admit he is greatly talented in other departments, but having him star in a comedy is a complete misjudgment he does not have the screen charisma or dialogue (or the facial expressions) to be truly funny. With the comedy left to Eric Tsang and the rest of the cast (Charlene Choi and Ng Man Tat) it should be funny right. Wrong. Not once is the comedy not extremely exaggerated.

As for the Kung Fu scenes choreographed by Ching Siu Tung they are mildly entertaining if not wire assisted.
I say kung fu scenes but there is only one real fight in the film involving Chou taking on a group of henchman and Jay Chou handles him self really well. The basketball scenes are a different story the audience never actually witnesses Jay's martial arts skills in the court instead he is super human which makes the film incorrectly named.

Watch Shaolin Soccer instead dont bother with this.

Not Bad Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
The movie is full of action, Good looking men, did I mention Good looking men. Anyway it's about an orphan who is kicked out of his home, learns basketball and joins a team. The movie would have been better if not for the unneeded computer graphics. It's not bad just to watch for the action and the men.

Very poor Customer Review Rated Bad 1 - 1 out of 10
This movie is rated aload of my bollocks. First of all, Jay cannot even act and the way he makes it out as if he was a martial arts player in this, it is a no no and has no expression in acting whatsoever. I am afraid him and Charlene cannot act and I wouldn't recommend any Jay Chou fans or Charlene Choi out there, because it is just a waste of money. Please keep your money in your pockets and buy things to eat instead.

Kung Fu Dunk Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Secret, the movie that marks Jay's directorial debut, is way better than this movie. Still, Kung Fu Dunk (Mandarin Version) is OK for me, especially for Chinese New Year (which it's intended for). In this movie, you can get to see Jay's comical sense. I like the scenes when he interacts with Eric Tseng. Heard that Kung Fu Dunk 2 will be directed by Andrew Lau (of Internal Affairs/Initial D fame), starring Jay again. Looking forward to that.
