Shaw Brothers Studio brings the charm and magic of the Monkey King to life in The Monkey Goes West, the first in a series of features adapting Wu Cheng En's beloved novel Journey to the West. Ho Fan (who later became a famous erotic film director) is the legendary Tang Dynasty priest Xuanzhang, who must form a group of disciples to help carry Buddhist scriptures to the West. First up is Sun Wukong (Shaw Brothers regular Ngok Wah), the legendary Monkey King cast down from the Heavens to await the Monk's mission. Xuanzhang is charged with reigning in the Monkey King's passion and penchant for mischief, while looking for a few other disciples, including the portly Piggy (Peng Peng) and a disgraced Dragon Prince. Battles and bickering impede the heroes in their quest, whose journey only begins here! Director Ho Meng Hua brings his talent for fantasy filmmaking to The Monkey Goes West, and the gorgeous sets and costumes (a Shaw Brothers trademark) successfully bring Wu Cheng En's world to vibrant celluloid life. The journey continues in Princess Iron Fan, Cave of the Silken Web, and The Land of Many Perfumes.
