A bold reinvention of the classic "A Journey to the West" begins in A Chinese Odyssey Part I - Pandora's Box, the first of director Jeff Lau's two-part epic starring none other than Hong Kong comedy king Stephen Chow! Joker (Stephen Chow) is a scruffy Ancient Chinese gang leader who's really the reincarnated form of the Monkey King, who was banished to human form by an immortal goddess as punishment for his cheeky behavior. Joker has no idea who he is, but the appearance of two evil sister demons (Yammie Lam and Karen Mok) and an immortal monk (director Jeff Lau) nudge Joker in the correct direction. But to bring about the rebirth of the Monkey King, Joker must first find the legendary Longevity Monk. That requires the Pandora's Box, a magical device which will enable Joker to travel into the past to find the Longevity Monk and complete the Journey to the West! But does Joker even want to become the Monkey King again?

Continued in the equally entertaining A Chinese Odyssey Part II - Cinderella, Stephen Chow and Jeff Lau's unique take on the Monkey King legend is an epic comedy masterpiece. With action directed by award-winner Ching Siu Tung (Hero), A Chinese Odyssey Part I - Pandora's Box is a costume comedy adventure unlike any you've ever seen!

Great Movie - BAD EDITIONCustomer Review Rated Bad - 0 out of 10Monday, May 08, 2006

- This customer review refers to A Chinese Odyssey Part 1 (Taiwan version)

This disc (described as the Taiwan DVD) is actually a poor transfer of a vcd into dvd format. The sides of the image are missing, and the picture quality is HORRIBLE. The Chinese and English subtitles are BOTH hard-coded into the picture on this disc!!

Buy the DTS version dvd, which also has a regular dolby soundtrack. It costs LESS than this disc, and has far superior picture quality. It also has selectable Chinese, English, Japanese, and Korean subtitles and is only $7.99

A ClASSIC.Customer Review Rated Excellent - 10 out of 10Sunday, May 09, 2004

A Chinese Odyssey is a great and enjoyable movie! Of course you have to see Part 1 and Part 2 together. For greater appreciation and understanding of this movie watch Shaw Brothers "The Monkey Goes West" first. You will get better acquainted, if not fall in love with, the main characters-Monkey, Piggy and Monk Tang (A.K.A. Longevity Monk.) Enjoy the adventure!

I watched it too many times!Customer Review Rated Excellent - 10 out of 10Sunday, November 30, 2003

I loved this movie. I love the main actor steven? I just love all his movies, he's so funny. Anyway, this movie is great, but it did take me 2 or 3 viewings to figure out who was in who's body in the 2nd video. It's funny, sad, and tragic sometimes. Most of his movies center around it. THere are always some parts that make u cringe from the pain they are inflicted with. But like always, funny and very entertaining.
