EASTERN CONDORS is director Sammo Hung's high-energy version of THE DIRTY DOZEN. To win their freedom, a group of hardened Asian convicts agree to go on a suicidal mission to Vietnam and destroy an abandoned ammunitions dump before the Vietcong discovers it. Along the way, the men run into a trio of female freedom fighters and a freewheeling martial artist named Rat, played by Hung's Peking Opera "brother," Yuen Biao. The film borrows liberally from other Vietnam war movies (the Russian roulette scene from THE DEER HUNTER, for instance), but there are plenty of imaginative turns, including an instance when Hung uses leaves as deadly projectiles. As is typical in Hung's films, the action choreography is fluid and energetic. Hung's wife, Joyce Godenzi, plays one of the Cambodian guerrillas, Oscar-winner Haing S. Ngor (THE KILLING FIELDS) appears as a mentally deranged peasant, and Yuen Wah (Hung's and Biao's other stage brother) gives a quirky performance as the relentless commander of the Vietcong forces.

Professional Review of "Eastern Condors (US Version)"

- This professional review refers to Eastern Condors (Digitally Remastered) (Joy Sales Version) (Hong Kong Version).
Like many a film from the island of Hong Kong, Eastern Condors is undeniably influenced by western films that come before it. Sammo Hung's actioner is a mix of every Vietnam War film you can think of and I counted direct steals from The Deer Hunter and Rambo 2, with possible nods to even more. As a piece of knock off entertainment, the film is lots of fun and even boasts a decidedly broad comic performance from Oscar winner Haing S. Ngor (The Killing Fields). Using these familiar influences, Hung gathers his usual collaborators together and delivers a cross between all those films and The Dirty Dozen. Most of all this is not a film to take seriously and any dramatic resonance or meaningful opinion contained herein is wholly unintentional! Taking its set-up directly from Robert Aldrich's original movie, a group of ten criminal Chinese American soldiers are sent to Vietnam to carry out a decoy raid whilst another posse carries out a real top secret raid... I remember back in 80s / 90s where I always look forward to Hong Kong movies. Especially when they grouped all well known actors / actresses and act in one show. Eastern Condor has Yuen Biao and Sammo Hung. Sadly, when I watch this movie again, I find it so so only. Therefore, I recommend you to rent this. It doesnt impress me like it did years back.

Sammo is obviously in his best physical appearance, pretty lean & mean in his convict/military character. Unfortunately you don't really get attached to the characters too much other than the fact that all the actors are recognizable action/stunt players of that time. The final showdown within the weapons silo is intense & makes trudging through the typical war movie build-up tolerable. (I would just fast forward to the end anyway) Some excellent stunts & fights bewteen the opera brothers, Sammo, Yuen Biao, Yuen Wah.

I love this movie...no romance but I love it. It's hard for me to find a copy for sale so I'm getting myself one. I can watch this one over and over...it's simply that good. The first half over is kind of slow, but once pass that point, all the actions pick up. I love Yuen Biao and I know Sammo's going to be do a great job. :D You won't be dissapointed if you are a chinese martial art/action fan. On a side note, I used to have the boot that looks exactly like Yuen Biao's...same color...exactly.
