The Mourning Forest (DVD) (English Subtitled) (Japan Version) Saito Yoichiro | Ono Machiko | Watanabe Makiko | Kawase Naomi
A remarkable achievement in humanistic storytelling, Kawase Naomi's The Mourning Forest (a.k.a. Mogari no Mori) won the Grand Prix at the 30th Cannes Film Festival. Japan's leading female director, Kawase won the Cannes Camera d'Or in 1997 for her debut feature Moe no Suzaku, and a decade later, she shows exactly how far she has come with The Mourning Forest. The director spent the ten years in between often pointing the camera at her own life with autobiographical documentaries like Tarachime and Sky, Wind, Fire, Water, Earth, and this same sensitive, subtle, and observant eye is cast on the protagonists of her latest film. Following the physical and emotional journey of two unlikely sojourners... [read more]

Forever cool and unreadable behind his stoic face, Gackt made his television acting debut in grand fashion in the 2007 NHK taiga drama Furin Kazan. Smile - Seiya no Kiseki (DVD) (English Subtitled) (Japan Version) Jinnai Takanori | Iijima Naoko | Hara Sachie | Sato Koichi
Japan's answer to The Mighty Ducks, Smile (a.k.a Smilers) is the second feature film from actor-turned-director Jinnai Takanori. Children's ice hockey and rock 'n' roll might not have too much in common, but Smile is infused with the same misfit humor, zero-to-hero cheer, and universal appeal as Jinnai's previous film Rockers. Though hockey can't compare to baseball and soccer in popularity in Japan, the sport has found its dedicated fans, none the least Jinnai who spent eight years working on Smile, from writing the story to eventually directing the film. Rising star Moriyama Mirai (Crying Out Love, in the Center of the World) leads the cast, along with Kato Rosa (Night Time Picnic, Catch a Wave... [read more]

Grindhouse Complete Box (DVD) (First Press Limited Edition) (Japan Version) Bruce Willis | Quentin Tarantino | Robert Rodriguez | Michael Biehn
Quentin Tarantino (Kill Bill) and Robert Rodriguez (Sin City) pay homage to the grindhouse films of yesteryear with their own B-movie double bill. This throwback bonanza consists of two feature-length horror films - Tarantino's Death Proof follows a murderous stuntman (Kurt Russell) who takes to stalking women, while Rodriquez's zombie feature Planet Terror is about a motley group of survivors who do battle against a zombie virus that has infected their small town. Complete with four fake trailers from Robert Rodriguez, Eli Roth (Hostel), Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead), and Rob Zombie (Halloween), Grindhouse is an indulgent, entertaining, and downright epic exercise in exploitation, serving... Rainbow Song (DVD) (English Subtitled) (Hong Kong Version) Suzuki Ami | Aoi Yu | Ichihara Hayato | Sakai Wakana
Director Kumazawa Naoto might not be a name that immediately grabs attention just yet, but his fifth film, Rainbow Song (a.k.a. Niji no Megami), is certainly catching eyes thanks to the backing of producer Iwai Shunji. Iwai also helped out with the screenplay under his pen name San Amino, along with Sakurai Ami and Saito Miyuki. Like many of Iwai's acclaimed works, Kumazawa's Rainbow Song is about youth, and there are quite a few familiar young stars onboard. Heartthrob Ichihara Hayato, the brooding lead from All About Lily Chou-Chou, and rising actress Ueno Juri (Swing Girls, Nodame Cantabile) star in the film, along with Aoi Yu (Hula Girls) and Aida Shoko (Alice's mother in Hana and Alice)...
