　　曾宮紀子與父親周吉相依為命。只要能事奉父親終老，即使嫁杏無期，紀子也半點不覺可惜。周吉為女兒的終身幸福，不惜騙她說要續弦，好讓紀子乖乖披上嫁衣。紀子終於出閣，卻不曉得父親就要孤獨終老。本片是小津安二郎和編劇野田高梧自１９３５年以來再次合作的第一部作品，為他日後的電影定下了基調。影片的原著本是父親說要續弦的謊話到頭來竟變成事實，但現在卻還是保留為謊話，這使得那段父女情更為感人，「孤獨果真是生命最終的結局嗎？」這個主題也變得更加深刻。不過作家里見淳（小津最心儀的作家）卻批評片末父親回家後強忍淚水削蘋果的處理太迎合通俗口味，是為技巧而技巧的計算，小津聽後深自反省。

Late Spring tells the story of a young woman who, somewhat past marriageable age, lives with her widowed father. She keeps refusing to marry until she is told but her father that he himself wishes to marry. Deeply disturbed, but believing that his is what he wants, she says nothing and in the end, gives in to marriage. The father, in fact, has no intention of marrying. After her daughter has gone to the honeymoon, he returns home and faces his loneliness, most probably for the rest of his life.
